What is this trial about?

Health and illness are multidimensional, universal concepts that are handled from a holistic perspective (Gürhan, Yaman Sözbir, & Polat, 2020). Thanks to the developments in the field of health, the life expectancy of people has increased, the number of chronic diseases defined and the number of surgical procedures performed has increased (Köstekli, Çelik, & Karahan, 2020). In this context, surgical procedures affect people's health and disease processes. Patients undergoing surgical procedures need the care of nurses and other health professionals to manage the consequences of this procedure (Cohen, 1980; Jerofke, Weiss, & Yakusheva, 2014). Nurses have undertaken many tasks in patient care. These are tasks related to accelerating recovery after illness and ensuring the continuity of health. Discharge trainings are also included in the practices carried out to fulfill these duties. Discharge trainings aim to accelerate and facilitate recovery and reduce the development of complications (Kang et al., 2020; Ronco et al., 2012). Discharge trainings are important in terms of providing surgical patients with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide post-discharge care (Miller et al., 2011). Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeries, which affect the quality of life of individuals, are procedures that affect hearing and balance unlike other surgical effects. Therefore, patient care and discharge education after ear surgery have an important place in recovery and health promotion (Pudner, 2005). Our ears are our organs of hearing and balance (Millward, 2017). Tympanoplasty surgery is applied to patients with tympanic membrane perforation or bone chain damage that affects our hearing and balance. Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves bone chain (malleus, incus, stapes) repair and/or fascia graft placement to restore hearing ability (Ahmed Mohamed Eldesoky & Mahmoud Mahmoud, 2019). In this study, it is aimed to determine the effect of nursing education given before tympanoplasty on postoperative pain and complication development.

What are the participation requirements?

Yes

Inclusion Criteria

- Patients who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study

- Literate patients

- Patients between 18 and 65 years of age

- Patients who have undergone tympanoplasty surgery

- Patients followed up preoperatively and postoperatively at Hacettepe -University Adult Hospital.

No

Exclusion Criteria

- Patients who refused to participate in the study

- Patients undergoing tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma. Evaluating the development of complications in patients diagnosed with cholesteatoma (abnormal growth of skin epithelium in the middle ear cavity) causing chronic and recurrent perforations is not appropriate due to recurrent perforations and abnormal tissue growth).

- Patients with psychiatric problems

- Foreign national patients.

- Patients with speech problems and permanent hearing loss
